Valverde is at the finish at Worlds - way over 200k....

Sanchez is NOT a Basque - believe he is the only non - Basque on E-E.

I'm pretty sure I've heard Sanchez described as Basque - I think it was from the Eurosport commentator, but I'm not entirely certain (and they could, of course, have been wrong). I know his name isn't Basque, but he certainly seemed to know the roads well at Pais Vasco.

And that is an excellent point about Valverde's strong finishes on long courses at Worlds. The '05 course was relatively flat, but not the '04 and '03 courses. I'm just trying to find some reason why he seemed so beat at Amstel; maybe the Worlds courses are raced less aggressively? Of course, he might have just been having a bad day.

According to the Euskaltel-Euskadi website, Sanchez is from Oviedo, in Asturias. It's on the north coast of Spain, just west of the Basque Country.

Hey Cosmo,

Found your cycling blog about a week ago and have enjoyed it, to bad these great spring classics don't get the coverage here in the states that the "Tour" does. Oh well, guess that kind makes pro cycling a bit more romantic.

So Alejandro Valverde, after watching him climb last year I have been keep an eye out for him. Seams like his 06 season is really coming together.

Keep up the good work ... ;-)

~ Tour Guy
