Although i agree with you, i must say that it takes balls to use the exapmle of the melting tarmac and resulting crash (and epic ride across the grass field) in the 03 tour as an example. A shattered femur isn't entertainment.

I am glad that the US 'cross nationals did not follow the same lead last December. I felt like a winner for just surviving the conditions and I heard no one whine and bitch.

Most riders in the grand tours only ride for their top 10 GC placing if they are out of contention for the top spot. The sponsors demand publicity and I guess the "hardness" of riders sold their soul to who wins various jerseys and a top 10 placing that we rarely see epic wins anymore since there is too much pub to risk in doing that.

Epic is a buzz word today. Resurfacing the Plan de Corones was a crime.

While I largely agree with your general sentiment that professional cyclists of today has lost some of that willingness to drink warm bourbon on Gavia pass while bleeding from their noses simultaneously, I think the decision to shorten the stage was made mostly because the early recon vehicles couldn't make it up Plan de Corones. And this of course would raise the question how would the riders get down the mountain once they (probably) walk up the climb.
