Contador’s style defined grand tours lately. Him attacking Andy Schleck on descents in the 2011 Tour is what pushed organizers to start designing attacking descents into grand tour stages, leading all the way to this year’s ill-fated Giro descender’s jersey idea. His victory in Fuente De – which was supposed to be a rouleur’s/breakaway kind of stage – is what woke organizers up to how pivotal short punchy stages could be, and we’ve seen a whole bunch more of those kinds of stages since. He was like the test market for how to game grand tour stages in ways they’d never been.
